The Complete Procurement Guide to CAT6A Shielding Variants

For procurement teams sourcing CAT6A cables, the variety of shielding options can be confusing. Each variant has specific performance characteristics, cost implications, and application suitability. Making the wrong choice can mean overpaying for unnecessary protection — or under-specifying for the environment.

Understanding the Notation

CAT6A shielding is described using a two-part notation: overall shield / individual pair shield. So S/FTP means braided overall shield (S) with foil-shielded twisted pairs (FTP). U/UTP means unshielded overall (U) with unshielded pairs (UTP).

U/UTP — Unshielded

No overall or pair shielding. Relies on pair geometry and separator design for crosstalk suppression. Most cost-effective variant. Best for: enterprise office environments, campus networks, residential installations where electromagnetic interference is minimal.

F/UTP — Foil Over Unshielded Pairs

Overall foil shield with unshielded individual pairs. Provides basic EMI protection without the cost and stiffness of pair-level shielding. Best for: general commercial installations, moderate-interference environments, PoE deployments.

U/FTP — Unshielded Overall with Foil Pairs

No overall shield, but each pair is individually foil-wrapped. Excellent alien crosstalk (AXT) performance due to pair-level isolation. Best for: high-density installations, bundled pathways, environments where cable-to-cable interference is the primary concern.

S/FTP — Braided Shield with Foil Pairs

Maximum protection: overall braided shield plus individual pair foil shielding. The gold standard for noise immunity. Best for: datacenters, industrial automation, hospital MRI rooms, factory floors with heavy machinery, any environment with significant EMI/RFI.

Cost and Installation Considerations

Higher shielding levels increase cable cost (typically 15–40% above U/UTP), cable weight, and installation complexity (shielded cables require proper grounding). The engineering decision should balance environmental requirements against total installed cost.
